Medicals in Malta

If you don't have a current medical certificate with you when you visit Malta on a diving adventure, or, you are taking up diving for the first time, you must undergo a short medical by a Maltese doctor. This is done for about 8UK pounds ( If I remember correctly) and takes the form of a medical questionnaire and a five minute medical. The Doctor usually calls by the dive-centre each morning to catch new arrivals. The 'Medical' consists of the following checks:-
  • listens to your heart;
  • listens to your chest and asks you to breathe in/out;
  • checks your blood pressure;
  • examines your inner-ears;
  • takes your weight;
  • asks you your height.

I suppose its a bit better than the PADI self-certification scheme but this medical does not substitute for a "proper" medical !!!

Malta dive-permits

Malta dive-permits are required for any (qualified) divers who are not diving with a Maltese dive-shop/school (for example, two divers diving with no Instructor or Dive Master). You can obtain these permits from any Maltese dive-shop on producing certs/logbook, valid medical, passport photo and 5 Maltese pounds. I believe these permits are only valid to the end of the calender year you obtained them.
